No, it’s not a hoax! Roger Federer announced the newest additions to his family today (via Facebook):
“Mirka and I are so incredibly happy to share that Leo and Lenny were born this evening! Twins again.. miracle!”
I’m a bit speechless, and basically filled with excitement, awe and yes, a whole bunch of questions. Are they identical? And if so, will they look like Mirka, or will Roger now have four mini Rogers dressed in coordinating outfits? Will Wayne Bryan be called in to coach? Is Lenny Kravitz going to be godfather? Exactly how many doubles team can these kids put together? Can we talk the Federers into starting their own World Team Tennis family team? Okay, okay no pressure. . .let’s let these two learn how to latch first.
In case you were wondering, a quick internet search pulled up these nuggets:
“If a woman has one set of identicals, her chance of having another is 1 in 70,000 or less.” (A miracle indeed!) “The odds of having one set of identicals and one set of fraternals is 1 in 10,000.” Okay, either way, they’re overachieving.
Perhaps the most rational, tennis-nerdy question is to wonder what this means for Roger’s upcoming French Open campaign. The first round of the tournament begins on Sunday, May 25, which is cutting it close, based on Roger’s update from just ten hours ago.
“I’ve decided to withdraw from Madrid to be with my wife Mirka during these next few exciting weeks for our family. I apologize to my fans and hope to be back in Madrid next year. I’ll be training near my home, and am excited to rejoin the Tour soon!”
I’m assuming Mirka was already in labor at the point of this last post, and perhaps Roger took a quick breather by the vending machines to update his Facebook status. The wording of “a few weeks” is obviously giving him some wiggle room in terms of his schedule. No doubt Rome is off the calendar but the French. . .well, with Djokovic and Rafa dealing with their own issues, this is probably one of his best, last chances to get his lovely hands on the coupe again. But of course, it’s family first! Especially now that Mirka and Roger are outnumbered.
(And sorry for the long hiatus – I promise we’ll be perked up in time for the French — hopefully Roger will, too!)
