For some reason ESPN didn’t show this year’s Australian Open men’s trophy ceremony with Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka, even though they delayed the finals and had enough time in their broadcast window to show a replay of the women’s final. This makes no sense to me. Trophy ceremonies, especially in tennis where we can see the loser’s reaction, are integral to the fans’ experience of the match.
Notice how Rafa gets emotional at the crowd’s warm reaction. A nice moment.
I’m glad Stan finally got around to mentioning his wife and daughter. ( was kind of wondering why they weren’t there. If Pete Sampras could make it. . .
We did get the pleasure of watching the women’s ceremony after the (delayed) match on Saturday morning in the States. Li Na was so quirky and charming, it’s worth another view:
But seriously – tape delayed finals?
