Well someone had to take him. As soon as it was confirmed that Rafa would have a 5 next to his name in the Wimbledon draw this year, we knew Nole, Murray and Fed started doing the draw dance behind closed doors (yes, that’s what I figure they do to woo the tennis gods – I’m thinking Andy’s a bit stiff.)
So when the WImbledon draw came out today, everyone was waiting for the answer to this question: who gets Rafa in the quarters?
The answer: Mr. Quarterfinals Streak, himself, and seven time Wimbledon champ, Roger Federer. (seen here practicing with Lleyton Hewitt and without a net – hey, whatever works!)
Well, Fed Fans, what did you expect after he squandered that gimme of a French Open draw? The Tennis Gods were not amused.
So the question is: Who do you think is more bummed out? Roger or Rafa? Or are they such warriors that they both simply relish the challenge? One thing’s for sure: Nole and Murray are sacrificing a few lambs in thanks (hopefully the tennis Gods don’t demand virgins!)
Andy Murray is seeded to take the winner of Rafa vs. Roger, if he gets past a potential quarterfinal with Tsonga. Djokovic could get Berdych in the quarters and the winner of Ferrer vs. Del Potro in the semis.
Perhaps the tennis gods just like to mess with their own? It seems they’ve had some fun with Serena’s draw – she’s seeded to meet Kerber in the quarters and the winner of A-Rad and Li Na in the semis. But she has some really meaty and maybe even dangerous early rounds to get through before that, like a third round vs. Tamira Paszek, who can only be described as a grass court specialist after making the quarterfinals the past two years, and either Stosur or Lisicki in the Round of 16. Maria Sharapova and Azarneka anchor the bottom of the draw, with Kvitova with Vika. Maria’s breathing a sigh of relief and popping some Sugarpova until the semis (Errani’s her seeded quarterfinal opponent).
SO – what are you looking forward to this fortnight?
Note – sorry to my fellow Fed Fans for not being here to celebrate Roger’s first title of the year in Halle last weekend! I’ve been swamped with some non-tennis stuff. And I can always blame the baby
