Wow, Roger Federer won his 10th straight ATP World Tour “Fans’ Favourite” award (a record) and his 8th Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award, accepting the honors today at a ceremony in the O2 arena. Roger, awards, a velvety blazer and champagne? That’s all the celebration I need.
“I always tried to play the game according to the rules.” (!) I love how Roger keeps it simple. When it comes to sportsmanship, I wonder who Roger votes for?
The video within the video – cute shot of Mirka and the twins at the start:
Justin Gimelstob is hanging around the O2 arena this week and scored a chance to practice with Roger. This video is only interesting to me because I rarely see Roger play in long sleeves. Or are those three-quarter inch? Either way: Looking good, Rog!
Moving on. . .Novak Djokovic scored two of the ATP’s most prestigious awards this week: World No. 1 and the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year Award. Here’s some video from Tuesday’s ceremony. Since we’re waxing sartorial, I’m a little leery of Novak’s nubby look.
Fabric selections aside, Novak is perfect in London so far. His hard-fought, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, win over Andy Murray on Wednesday showed that he’s not tempted to sit back and relax on his 2012 laurels. Roger, who has always stressed the importance and prestige of the WTF, plays David Ferrer on Thursday. Is it too early to start drooling over a Nole vs. Roger final? Probably. . .but what an attractive prospect!
A quick shout out to the other ATP World Tour Awards winners:
ATP World Tour No. 1 Doubles Team: Bob Bryan & Mike Bryan – 4th consecutive year, record 8th time. They also won Fans’ Favourite doubles team for the 8th time, another record.
Comeback Player of the Year as voted by ATP players: Tommy Haas – from 200 at the beginning of the season to top 25, and a win in the Halle finals over Roger Federer!
Newcomer of the Year: Martin Klizan
Most Improved Player of the Year (voted by ATP players): Marinko Matosevic
