SUNDAY PHOTO PREVIEW: FEDERER VS. DJOKOVIC COLLIDE IN CINCY

2012 0815 14000 Andrea Nay SUNDAY PHOTO PREVIEW: FEDERER VS. DJOKOVIC COLLIDE IN CINCY

Andrea Nay is back at us from Cincy, with a photo-riffic preview of today’s men’s final between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, which the ESPN commentators have jinxed as potentially the biggest non-major match of the season. The men play at 12:30 eastern (shown on CBS), followed by the women’s final of Li Na vs. Angelique Kerber on ESPN2. Enjoy!

Today the two best men’s tennis players on the planet face off in Cincinnati.

This is the first time the Western & Southern Open will see a world No. 1 and No. 2 meet in the title match, and Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic both have compelling reasons to reach for the trophy. Federer would be the first to win Cincinnati five times. Djokovic would shake off his three finals losses, including 2011, to win his first W&S title.

How do Nole and the Maestro stack up against one another?

Fed vs. Nole, By the Numbers

If we’re looking at career stats, Federer has almost double the wins, titles, and prize money. Of course, he also has five more years as a pro on Nole.

If we’re judging on this summer alone, Federer gets the nod, as his Wimbledon trophy (which included a win over Djokovic in the semis) and Olympic silver medal trump Djokovic’s Toronto prize. However, in May on clay at Roland Garros, Djokovic triumphed. He also got the best of Federer in Rome this year and, famously, at Flushing Meadows last year in an epic five set battle.

Overall head-to-head stats? Federer leads Djokovic 15-12. On hard courts, Fed’s won the series, but just 11-9. Their only meeting here in Cincinnati was the 2009 final where Federer won 6-1, 7-5.

This week, they’re straight-up even based on an unlikely stat. Neither player has dropped serve even once leading up to the final.  No player has ever won a Grand Slam or Masters Series tournament unbroken. Can one of these two do it?

Fed vs. Nole, In the Press Room

Djokovic kept his assessment of the match brief. “Not to spend too much words about Roger,” he said. “We all know how good he is, especially in later stages of events.”

Federer acknowledged the challenge Nole presents, conceding he “couldn’t have a tougher test, because he [Djokovic] is playing so great on the hard courts.” He did go a step further, adding a positive spin: “Then again, I’m going for my fifth [in Cincinnati] and I’m feeling well, I have no issues, and I can just really go for it and make it happen tomorrow.”

Fed vs. Nole, In Pictures

“On any given Sunday, you’re gonna win or you’re gonna lose,” says Al Pacino’s character Tony D’Amat0. “The point is, can you win or lose like a man?”

Our version? Can you win or lose and look good doing it? Here, we match up these two gladiators in pictures from this week.
