We just watched the women semifinalists play six sets of nervy, dramatic, up and down tennis. Sharapova finally took the match from Petra Kvitova, overcoming the usual double faults and streaky tennis to get to that final victory shriek. As a late-blooming Masha fan (love the clenched fist, love the killer glamazon vibe, kind of like her flat as a frying pan game), I’m thrilled to see her with a chance to win her first post-surgery Major title (her last one came in Melbourne in 2008 – a torrid run to the title) and retake the No. 1 ranking.

Sharapova’s final opponent and a first time Major finalist, Vika Azarenka, beat Kim Clijsters in a see saw of a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, scoreline. The fiery Belarussian, rarely endearing, let down her guard after the win, letting out tears and this quip: “Before I think you all thought I’m a mental case. I was just young and emotional.” (via NYTimes).
She will also get a chance to win a long longed for Major title. And the No. 1 ranking. And exclusive rights to the neon green Nike visor?
So the “Scream Queen” headlines are already posted (personally, I think these two are the best grunters in the biz. I much prefer their powerful emissions to the dog toy squeaks of Ivanovic, say, or the wails of Safina). But this contest of the “Deci-Belles” has much more going for it than audio deathmetal: we’re going to witness two hard as nails bee-otches battling against each other for a Major title they both want so badly – for only slightly different reasons – and for the top spot in the game. How cool is that?

Well. . .maybe not as cool as a Federer vs. Nadal semifinal Though I’m feeling fairly hot under the collar just thinking about it. . .YIKES! The women’s final is set but there’s still some Majorly un-finished business to tend to. Roger vs. Rafa! (Yes, Nole vs. Andy, too!) BUT DAMN, it’s ROGER VS. RAFA TIME.
