US Open time means tennis suddenly hits the American mainstream, at least a little bit. Rafael Nadal was on David Letterman last night, peddling his new autobiography: Rafa. I love how nervous he looks – at one point it looks like he’s going to give himself a hand injury from all the wringing. The conversation is surprisingly sarcasm-free and tennis focused – I’d say 95% of the viewing public had no idea what they were talking about (Orantes! Formula One!) until they touched on Chris Evert and Bjorn Borg. But Rafa must have won over quite a few tennis neophytes with that smile:
