Serena Williams retired just hours before her second round match at the Western & Southern Open today. The culprit? Her big toe, which she says needs rest before the US Open. Williams said her toe injury, which began with a broken glass incident in Germany last summer and required surgery, flared as she hit the gym this morning.
“It’s just a bit of an aggravation because I think I’ve been pounding it a lot and playing a lot.”
After noticing some swelling, she consulted her father and sister Venus. They agreed, she said, that she should rest the toe. Williams said she has “great relationship” with her body. “Right now I’m really in tune and really in touch with that.”
“If anything, this might be a blessing in disguise,” Williams added. “I might get some more rest and prepare for the rest of the year.”
Asked whether the derailment from Cincinnati would impact her US Open chances, she was hopeful. “If anything, it’ll make ’em better maybe because I have more opportunity to rest up and get 200% healthy, which could be a dangerous thing.”
Williams’ friend Kim Kardashian will marry New Jersey Nets power forward Kris Humphries Saturday, reportedly at the Sotto Il Monte estate in Montecito, California. Will Williams attend? “Now that I have the time, I probably will.”
In another blow for the WTA side, world no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki was upset by unseeded American Christina McHale. (Cue the questions about love distractions? – FF) In Center Court action, Mardy Fish dismissed Nikolay Davydenko 6-0, 6-2. Rafael Nadal battled to defeat qualifier Julien Benneteau 6-4, 7-5.
