Today’s Roger Federer’s 30th birthday, and he posted this message to his fans:
Happy Birthday Roger! I’d make a list of the 30 Things I Love About You, but I can really summarize it in one sentence: “Your style on and off the court.”
As for the video, I had to laugh at Roger’s literal run-down of his fabulous 30 years – I’m surprised he didn’t say something like “I really enjoyed my time in the womb!” The funny thing is, there’s no doubting he really means it – this is not the kind of guy who’s sits in a bar or on a psychologist’s couch blaming his parents, his awkward teenage years or his romantic relationships for anything that ails him. Just another reason not to look forward to his retirement: there won’t be a juicy tell-all!
Roger’s lack of psychic angst has served him well over the years, just look at his free-flowing style and easy command at the top of the game. But as he gets closer to the dreaded “R” word, I’m comforted to realize that this sunny attitude also extends his longevity on the pro circuit. Maybe not for the “next 30 years” that Roger references in his video (I admit, I wouldn’t mind!), but we still have him for a good, long while.
Peter Bodo pulled this recent Roger quote in his post at Tennis.com (“Birthdays Happen”):
“My plans are probably always a bit a year ahead of time. I probably plan one-and-a-half years ahead. So I’m already way past this point. I’m already thinking beyond the Olympics next year. So that’s kind of how my schedule goes. . .”
Okay, I need add to my one-sentence summary? I not only love Roger’s style, but his love of the game as well.
Happy Birthday, Rog!
