Novak Djokovic beat Rafael Nadal 7-5, 6-4 in the Madrid Open final this Sunday. Nole’s won six out of the six tournaments he’s played this year and three of the past three matches he’s played vs. Nadal. All three of these matches just happen to be in Masters finals. The last couple matches were on Nole’s preferred hard courts, however, this one is particularly notable because it comes on Rafa’s home turf: Spanish clay. (Though we could split hairs about the elevation.)
Moving on. . .
Novak broke Rafa’s 37 clay-court match winning streak with his own 34th consecutive match victory for the year. Nole could even swipe the No. 1 ranking if he continues his winning ways through Rome.
It’s all just a bitun-fricking-believable!
So it this a blip, like when Roger beat Rafa in Madrid a couple years ago? Or is this the scariest thing ever for Rafa and his fans?
Sorry for the lack of insightful commentary – I’m just catching up thanks to my DVR (awesome tweener lob from Rafa, btw!) – my mom and I were preoccupied with mother’s day activities this weekend. It’s a very good thing I was distracting her with brunch and sight seeing, since Mom is a true blue Rafa fan and was worrying about her boy all day. And I thought only Roger fans employed the always-assume-the-worst strategy.
Go Bryans! They beat Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic in the doubles final, winning Madrid for the fourth time. Shoe ins for the French title, I say.
On the WTA side, Petra Kvitova racked up 40 winners on her way to a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over Vika Azarenka in the women’s Madrid final. Her run in the Spanish capital puts her into the top 10 for the first time. Anyone who’s seen her play, knows that it was only a matter of time. She’s won three titles so far this year.
Azarenka won’t leave Madrid empty-handed – she and partner Maria Kirilenko took out the three top-seeded teams on their way to double glory in Madrid. They beat No. 2 seeds Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik in Saturday night’s final: 6-4, 6-3.
And they win cutest doubles team of the year:
