Martina Navratilova recently made the public prediction that Roger Federer would never regain the # 1 ranking.
Here’s Martina’s quote via Tennis.com’s Ticker:
“Roger is on the other side of the float, I don’t think he’ll ever play as well as he did three or four years ago—that’s not to say he can’t still win a slam, but it’s difficult to see him climbing back to No. 1,” Navratilova said. “Nadal is dominating and Djokovic’s confidence is off the chart. Roger has lost three matches (this season) to Djokovic and lost to him at U.S. Open last year as well, it will get under his skin.”
Things that make Roger say “Hmmmmm. . . ”
Roger Federer responded today:
“Maybe she missed the London World Tour Finals. Maybe she was somewhere else climbing Kilimanjaro. I love her. Look, I think she’s been an inspiration to my wife [Mirka] and I always love seeing her, but if you had the microphone in front of you and you get a negative question, you get dragged into it. And she’s in front of the microphone a lot of times like other experts and eventually you can’t just say only good things. You have to also say more negative things.”
Love how Roger’s digs in with a sarcastic back-handed compliment – “Maybe she was somewhere else climbing Kilimanjaro”. Then tries to cool it with a “I love her”. (Well, he probably really does love Martina – it was Navratilova that encouraged the young Mirka Vavrinec to pursue tennis. Without Martina’s urging, perhaps Mirka would have done something other than play tennis at the Sydney Olympics, where she and Roger hooked up. Hmmmmm, indeed – freakyfrites)
Poor Roger, he dips down to No. 3 and it’s like he’s turned into Julien Benneteau. Yes, Djokovic and Nadal are at the peaks of their powers, but it’s not like losing to Nole three time in a row is the ultimate tennis death knell.
