Wow. Did everyone enjoy the Roger and Rafa doubleheader Wednesday night in the desert? I thought they were perfect matches for fans – both were tested just enough to make things interesting, but fingernails were spared with straight set victories. The bright eyed qualifiers looked great, the GOATS showed off their experience.
Rafa took out a valiant Somdev Devvarman 7-5, 6-4. Roger was pushed to a first set tie break by eighteen year old American (18!) Ryan Harrison. The youngster showed off a great serve and a promising willingness to get to the net. And wow, he’s just eighteen.
Roger gets countryman Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals, but first they have to play doubles together vs. Knowles/Mertinak on Thursday. Nadal will play Ivo Karlovic. (Ivo took out Albert Montanes
Did everyone already read this terrific little slice-o-Rafa story from Bill Dwyer in the LA Times? If you missed it, check it out!
Novak Djokovic dismantled his Davis Cup buddy and doubles partner, Victor Troicki 6-0, 6-1. (They were knocked out of the doubles by the Indo-Pak express.)
No hard feeling I guess. . .
Nole’s lost a whopping 5 games on his way to the quarterfinals. The guy’s playing scary good – does anyone think he’s beatable right now?
Richard Gasquet is likely Nole’s next hapless victim, though the enigmatic Frenchman enjoyed a nice, straight-set win over Andy Roddick on Wednesday.
Del Potro continues his blazing comeback with a win over Kohlschreiber. The Argentine will play Tommy Robredo.
On the ladies side, well, Sharapova made Safina suffer on Tuesday with a 6-2, 6-0 victory. She’ll play Peng in the quarterfinals tomorrow. Wozniacki meets Azarenka in the other quarterfinal left to play.
Marion Bartoli took down Ana Ivanovic a notch after the Serb’s deliriously happy win over rival Jelena Jankovic on Tuesday. (Ana wasn’t looking so giddy on Wednesday.)
The Frenchwoman faces Yanina Wickmayer in the bottom half semifinal.
What match are you looking forward to the most? I’m all about Woz vs. Vika and Rog vs. Stan. And of course, Fed and Stan are just one win away from that Nadal/Lopez doubles semifinal. You think that one will be on TV?
Ending with a nice shot of Rog, in full superhero mode:
