Hey everyone, it’s Van here with another S&R–Indian Wells-style! This is the first of the under-Slam-status tournaments on the calendar, and the defending singles champs are Ivan Ljubicic on the men’s side and Jelena Jankovic for the women.
Probably the biggest news heading into this year’s tournament is the battle for the number-two spot in the ATP rankings. Roger Federer is trying to hold off the only player he’s lost to this year, Australian Open champ Novak Djokovic. They’re slated to play each other in the semis at this tournament and the last time they met, Djokovic handled Federer pretty easily. That could be a bad sign for Fed, because two other top-five players–Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray–were already topping him consistently at tournaments outside the Majors. Adding another player to the mix could make for a long year with the clay-court season looming on the horizon.
So it would seem that the BNP Paribas Open takes on greater meaning as far as showing the guys on tour that he’s the same old Federer, right? Or will he be OK even if he loses early like last year?
Anyway, here’s the “serve” coming at you:
Is Indian Wells a “must-win” for Roger Federer?
There you go: Enjoy the start of the tournament!
