Hey everyone, it’s Van with another Serves and Returns for you that I think is quite apropos for what could happen this week on the WTA Tour.
As we all know, there’s a new name at the top of the rankings this week: Kim Clijsters. (Or should that be an old one?) Anyway, it’s kind of hard to argue about what she’s accomplished at the last two Majors, namely winning them.
But what about the old number one, Caroline Wozniacki? She’s back in action this week in Dubai and has a chance to get her spot atop the throne back. If she pulls that off, the same old baggage will come along with it–questions about whether she deserves the ranking without having won a Slam.
Her career resembles a couple of other women who became number one without bagging one of the big ones: Jelena Jankovic and Kim Clijsters. Plenty of titles won, Major finals made, similar playing style. But while Clijsters won one U.S. Open pre-comeback and three more Majors post, Jankovic hasn’t made a Slam final since her runner-up finish at the U.S. Open back in ’08. While still a top 10 player, Jankovic has a lot of players ahead of her that are considered real Slam contenders and could possibly find herself shut out when it’s all said and done.
So the “serve” coming at you this go-around is:
Will Wozniacki be the next Clijsters or Jankovic?
