I like the Busted Racquet’s take: “Well, this is one way to make people stop talking about losing that 70-68 fifth set at Wimbledon.”
Team France already lost to Team USA earlier in the week, this particular mixed up doubles match was arranged when both Laura Robson and Francesca Schiavone withdrew from the tournament with injuries (via tennis-x). I’m sure the crowd didn’t mind the substitution.
