Hey all, it’s Van here, and I hope you’re enjoying your first week of the tennis off season! What will us tennis fans do? Read more GoToTennis, of course! [Gee, I really need to get going on those "Best Of" lists! - f.f.]
Someone who’s having an off season of epic proportions is Serena Williams as it was announced last week that she won’t be playing until next spring (see “Bedazzled Serena Williams Won’t Play Tennis Until Spring 2011″). That’ll be a loonng time without going up against the young guns on the WTA Tour, such as Caroline Wozniacki, as well as veterans like Kim Clijsters, the recently crowned WTA Player of the Year.
Big sis Venus is no slouch in the layoff department, either, having shut it down the last few months of the season due to injury. The field will be just as eager to take it to her when she comes back, too.
Serena’s had long layoffs before, and just when you think the game might’ve passed her by, she picks up a few Slams and is back at number 1 before you know it. Same for Venus, who surprised everyone with her return to the number-two spot last year. But how many times can they go to the well?
So this week’s “Serve,” right up the T, is:
Will Serena or Venus Williams win any more singles Slams in their careers?
Based on their career arcs, it’d be foolish to bet against them: Since 1999, the only year neither one of them has bagged a Major was in 2006, which isn’t too shabby a stat. But Mother Time has to come a’callin’ at some point, right?
