Thanks to GTT reader, Liz, for sending along rapper Lil Wayne’s US Open predictions to me. His stint as Sports Illustrated guest tennis writer coincides with a stint at Rikers Island for a weapons charge – will he replace Chris McKendry on ESPN2 when his eight month sentence is over?
It’s always fun when a pop culture celebrity shows a real knowledge of the game. Tennis still has that niche, country club stigma here in the States, so we tennis boosters love it when our little world collides with say, People Magazine via Sports Illustrated via the New York City Department of Correction.
Lil Wayne reveals a strong Rafanatic streak and a soft spot for Sharapova. But here’s my favorite part of his letter to SI (emphasis mine):
“I’m definitely rooting for him (Nadal) to get the Grand Slam and win the US Open. He’s already became the second youngest player to win 8 major titles before the age of 25.”
YES! Lil Wayne joins me and Bud Collins on our pedantic quest to use the terms “Grand Slam” and “Major” correctly! A Major title refers to the US Open, Wimbledon, French and/or Australian Open tournaments and winning a Grand Slam means winning all four Majors – think of it like a grand slam in baseball. But of course, y’all knew that already.
