Tonight, Wednesday, August 25, is Nike’s Primetime Knockout Event, a slick hit-and-giggle featuring Nike-sponsored tennis legends John McEnroe, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova and the still-injured Serena Williams (will she play guest chair ump?) Not-yet-legends Victoria Azarenka and the young Madison Keys will be taking part, along with some “hot celebrities.” Methinks it’s going to be some kind of pro/am doubles thing, but we’ll have to wait and see how it plays out.
If you can’t make it down to New York’s Pier 54 this evening (have fun, Judy!), you can watch the action via live stream starting at 8:00 p.m. EST. Click here for the Nike Tennis facebook page, which will have the streaming link.
Here’s one of my fave shots of Team Guns ‘N’ Buns from last year’s Game. Set. NYC. event:
And reminisce with Judy, here.
I really do love the tennis marketing blitz that hits NYC the week before the Open. It’s becoming a real tennis tradition – like complaining about the crowd at Roland Garros and eating strawberries and cream during Wimbledon. Awww, those Europeans and their quaint, old world traditions. Who needs grass and clay when you have the Grapple in the Apple?
Meanwhile, at Flushing Meadows, qualifying is well underway and the US Open main draw will be announced, televised (via ESPN2) and live streamed (via ESPN3) tomorrow at noon, local time.
