I managed to read through the whole Harper’s Bazaar feature on Serena Williams, even though the sub-headline made me want to puke:
“She’s won 26 Grand Slam titles, but the tennis champion’s new body is her biggest victory yet.”
Uh, what? According to the article, Serena’s supposedly renewed devotion to fitness has trimmed her down from a size 12 to a size 10. WOW. Going down a dress size or two is the equivalent of winning 26 major titles? Given my mild weight fluctuations over the years, I guess I’ve won the equivalent of 130 Major titles. Go me.
Funny, Serena never actually says as much in the article. I guess the editors don’t mind putting words in her mouth – as long as it’s not food, right? Keep up the good work, Harper’s Bazaar.
Here’s some of what Serena actually said: “Since I don’t look like every other girl, it takes a while to be okay with that. To be different. But different is good.”
Looking different is good. Winning 27 Major titles is better. Making the cover of Sports Illustrated ain’t bad either (but do we really have to hate her?)
