Well, that was kind of a bummer. Schiavone vs. Dementieva had all the components of a great match: two tough veterans, a power baseliner vs. a wily dirt baller, a Russian vs. an Italian, the Best Player Never to Win a Slam vs. the definition of deserving dark horse. And what did we get? No mas. (A calf tear, possibly an ankle thing, questionable for Wimbledon.)
Q. Had you won the first set, would you have been encouraged to continue the match?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: It was very painful to walk. I don’t think so. I was just, you know, going on the court trying to play, trying to fight, because it is a very special moment for everyone, and also for myself.
So even with this pain, I was trying to play, but I don’t think I could go longer than that.
But we do get the first Italian woman to ever play in a Major final. Forza Francesca!
Q. Have you ever kissed a court before here?
FRANCESCA SCHIAVONE: No. Two days ago. (laughter.)
No, is the second time.
Q. How does it taste? (Laughter.)
FRANCESCA SCHIAVONE: It was good. So good.
Sam Stosur was one cool customer against Jelena Jankovic, wholloping the former World No. 1: 6-1, 6-2.
Just to show how quickly things can change in tennis:
Q. You and, I think, Francesca played a first round match here last year. I’m wondering, what do you remember about that match? Looking back with 20/20 hindsight now, could you have ever imagined how this would have played out?
SAMANTHA STOSUR: Yeah, it’s quite funny we played each other first round last year and now we’re both in the finals. I don’t actually remember that much about that match. I know it was cold and wet and whatever. I got through it. We also played the final of the tournament in Osaka at the end of the year last year, as well. That was the last time we played. We’ve had a lot of matches against each other. I think we both have a very good way about the way each other play. We’re both going to be excited. It’s a great opportunity for both of us. I’m just looking forward to it.
Stosur overcame a frustrating 0-5 career record in singles finals last year with her victory over Schiavone. But both women are 0-0 in Major finals. So who’s going to make it 1 for 1?
