Roger Federer got a good warm up on Thursday at the Guinot Mary Cohr Masters, a tune-up exo for Roland Garros. The World No. 1 was stretched to a super tie-break, eventually defeating Rainer Schüttler: 4-6, 6-3, 10-5. Here’s some video from the match.
Roger speaking some French at the press conference:
A fun rally between Guinot Mary Cohr Masters participants, Andy Roddick and Josselin Ouanna:
Roddick won the hotdog point but lost the match: 6-7, 6-7, to his French opponent. It’s kind of crazy – with Roddick’s withdrawal in Madrid last week due to illness, this was his first singles match on clay since 2009. The American No. 1 is playing one more exo match vs. Mikhail Youzhny before the Main Event begins. Not exactly ideal preparation, but I think it’s safe to say that Roddick’s not putting any of his eggs in the French Open basket at this point.
Andy Murray won his match 7-6, 6-7, 11-9 in a super tiebreak vs. Mardy Fish. Fish had a match point.
Other news coming out of the exo: French veteran and best of five warrior, Sebastien Grosjean, announced that he’ll be retiring at the end of the season, claiming that the mind is willing but the flesh is too weak for the grind of the tour. He’s playing doubles with Richard Gasquet next week in Paris (hey, wouldn’t that be a cool story if the two super-Frenchies actually won the tournament?)
