Thank you so much to the folks at Argentine tennis blog Fue Buena for alerting me to their latest update – Juan Martin Del Potro has written a letter confirming that he is having wrist surgery today at the Mayo Clinic. He will likely miss Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Here’s del Potro’s letter, which I’ve translated (roughly) with the help of GoogleTranslate. I decided to write because I want you to know by my own words of what is happening to me. Today, Tuesday, May 4, my ulnar extensor tendon in my right wrist carpal will be operated on by Dr. Berger, a specialist in the field, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Throughout this year, I wanted to avoid surgery with different treatments, but obviously the injury was more serious. I came to the United States, the doctor did tests on the court and various studies to locate the points of pain. And there he made the decision to the operation.
As you all understand, is not a happy moment in my life. But I’m used to fighting adversity and I have all the forces to move this forward. So, I wanted to break the news myself. I will not to explain what don´t exist. .. . .[click here to read more.] But the wrong information not only affects my family, my team and the people who take care of me. It also affects you who read news that isn´t true.
The recovery time is long but it depends on many factors that today can not be measured because it is so recent. I will spend the first days of the post-operation phase here and days after I will return to Argentina, where I´ll inform you about every step of my recovery. I understand your anxiety, but I hope you understand my point.
Finally, I want to thank all the fans who showed me unconditional support. Those who crossed the streets of my country and those who encouraged me from anywhere in the world via the Internet. Now I will need you more than ever. You are phenomenal and your strength gives me great motivation to return. So enjoy and be together.
Thank you very much everybody,
Juan Martin Del Potro
Update* Thanks to Uri Stilman from doblemixto.com.ar for help with the translation. He tells me that Del Potro’s letter was sent to a radio show (on No Somos Nadie – Rock&Pop radio.)
Update #2* Uri has the scoop: “The surgery was successful and only demanded 40 minutes. The estimated rehab time is 4 months. He will try to come back before the US Open.”
Update # 3: The NYTimes offers some details on Dr. Berger and perspective on wrist injuries in tennis:
Dr. Richard Berger, who performed del Potro’s operation, is a leading hand surgeon and has helped professional athletes, including Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Jayson Werth, resolve complex wrist problems.
Among leading tennis players, Andre Agassi, Kim Clijsters and Venus Williams have recovered from wrist surgery and resumed winning. The right-handed del Potro, who plays with a two-handed backhand, said that his problem was with a tendon in his right wrist.
