Thank you Doubles Superstar Mahesh Bhupathi for giving us all a sneak peek (via Twitter) of this year’s annual ATP players’ revue in Monte Carlo – where the ATP gets seriously silly. It’s like a high school talent show meets frat boy kegger meets Shakespeare theater before actresses were allowed on stage.
Good thing the ATP tour doesn’t make a video for us slobbering fan nerds, or it would be sanitized down to Novak Djokovic’s John McEnroe impression. But here’s some youtube goodness from 2008, to give you an idea of the general kitsch-tastic feel of the thing. It’s impressive that the guys rehearse their roles (perhaps we’ve found the real reason behind all the complaining about the packed tour schedule?) but the absolute best part is Ivan Ljubicic dancing to Rihanna at the very end – after Djokovic’s impressive Thriller dance.
Until we figure out how to crash the party – or pool enough cash to bribe Potito Starace or someone into posting some 2010 footage – we’ll just have to enjoy these tantalizing tidbits of the latest variety show offered up on Mahesh’s Twitter account (follow him @heshpathi):

Oh, hilarious! Actually, I have no idea what’s so funny about a Russian challenger tournament – that’s just too inside tennis for me. Anyone want to guess the identity of the boys in the blond wigs?

Hmm. . .did they do a skit on the Gillette Curse, perhaps? Other incidents ripe for hilarity: Gulbis and the Swedish hooker sting, Agassi playing the French Open final in a loose toupee, Djokovic stripping in Montreal, Radek Stepanek’smesmerizing hold on the now-retired Nicole Vaidisova (actually, that’s not that funny), Novak’s new “Nole” shorts, Andy Murray’s video game addiction impeding his romantic life (maybe he and Tiger could talk), Davydenko holding court at this year’s Australian Open press conferences, Roger Federer’s bathroom break strategy vs. Kolya Down Under. . .what am I forgetting?
