The WTA tour gave out its awards today. Serena Williams “wearing high heels despite a knee injury” (ouch, the AP is getting all judgmental!) won 2009 WTA Tour Player of the Year.
She and Venus won Doubles Team of the Year, natch.
Kim Clijsters won Comeback Player of the Year and the Karen Krantzcke Sportsmanship Award (for the 7th time in her career! Someone’s getting that award re-named.)
Melanie Oudin won Newcomer of the Year.
Yanina Wickmayer won Most Improved Player award.
Liezel Huber won the Player Service Award (for the 4th time) for her charity work for Hurricane Katrina victims and the orgnization “Locks of Love.”
Elena Dementieva won Fan Favorite Singles Player of the Year. I was mildly surprised by this until I saw this photo:
I have to say – everyone cleaned up quite nicely. That skirt Serena’s wearing should be a no, but somehow she makes it a yes, yes, yes! Where were all these wonderful outifts at the Sony Ericsson Kick Off Party? (I’m letting Venus get away with the Uggs, she’s built up enough sartorial credit.)
