How about a mid-week Marat Safin pick-me-up?
This photo was just too cute not to post. Marat Safin and Anastasia Myskina were photographed at the Novinsky Passazh shopping arcade in Moscow on Friday for the draw of the Tennis Legends in Moscow event. Last weekend’s exhibition tournament featured “the brightest tennis stars of the 90s” in a team vs. team format. Team Russia: Marat Safin, Andrey Chesnokov and Andrey Chesnokov vs. Team World: Goran Ivanisevic, Jim Courier, Sergi Bruguera. From what I gather, Team Russia won. And nice hair, Marat!
Goran Ivanisevic won both of his matches, including a one-setter vs. Safin in the Battle of the Big Personalities. Here he is at the draw ceremony – still looking louche:
For someone who claimed to be dead tired of the tennis scene, the recently-retired Safin is still playing a lot of events. He’ll make his debut on the Seniors circuit this weekend in Rio and is joining Andy Roddick and Pete Sampras at an exhibition in Atlantic City this April.
As much as I wish Marat was still a force on the ATP tour, I’m just glad that he isn’t shunning the spotlight and holing up in some remote village in the Himalayas! He was also out and about at the Vancouver Olympics, where he posed for a photo with Canadian figure skating bronze medalist, Joannie Rochette. I wonder if he and Plushenko met for vodkas. . .
