ROGER FEDERER WITHDRAWS FROM DUBAI TOURNAMENT WITH LUNG INFECTION

Oh no. This is not good:

Roger Federer has pulled out of this week’s tournament in Dubai.

Roger has had to pull out of the Dubai Championships because of a lung infection.

Roger started having problems last week and is expected to be out of action for a further two weeks. If everything goes well, he will return to action at Indian Wells in March.

Via the AP:

“I’m hoping to be back for Indian Wells. But of course, there are no promises,” Federer said. “This is something that will be finished only with proper treatment.

“I’ve been taking it easy, relaxing as much as possible. My breathing is a bit difficult and everything feels a bit slow. I can’t take any chances until I’m fit again. It could be better, it could be worse.”

Yep. Not good. Unless you’re playing in the tournament this week. This is the second year in a row Roger Federer has pulled out of his “home” tournament in Dubai. In 2009, he withdrew due to a back injury. Novak Djokovic is the defending champion.

I wouldn’t hold my breath for Indian Wells, Fed fans. (I’m too disappointed to have that joke be intended.) I haven’t seen a report on the exact nature of his illness though common lung infections include bronchitis and pneumonia. Or it could be some other kind of bacterial thing that he caught while traveling. Pure conjecture, of course, until we hear something definite.

I’m typing this on the fly (thanks to Ranjolie for the alert) Feel free to post your updates below.
