My God, it’s not even the Australian Open yet and we’ve already been treated to one of the best matches of the year!
Saturday night’s all-Belgian final in Brisbane lived up to the hype. If anything, it surpassed it. There was loads of power on display, plenty of finesse and tension you could cut with a knife. Kim Clijsters played, at times, simply unbeatable tennis. Justine Henin proved that a true champion never loses her warrior spirit. Henin came back from two breaks down in the second set and held championship points in the third – playing in her first real tournament since May of 2008! Clijsters proved that her latest US Open title wasn’t a fluke of good fortune.
Except for a few gals on the WTA tour, who won’t be dreaming of a Henin vs. Clijsters rematch in the Australian Open finals? (Dang, let’s just pray they don’t meet in the first round.)
Oh, and in case there are a few grumpy Henin fans out there who are having a hard time getting over this loss – Kim Clijsters is donating all of her prize money ($37,000) to a children’s hospital in Brisbane.
On the men’s side, we get Roddick vs. Radek at 2pm, local time, on Sunday. That’s 11:00 pm, Saturday evening, on the East Coast of the U.S.A.
Okay, it’s 4:00 am where I live, so I better stop typing now. I can’t believe the sleep deprivation has already started!
