I am Maria Sharapova, hear me roar!
Maria Sharapova defeated Victoria Azarenka Tuesday night at the LA Tennis Championships in a rousing battle of the big-shrieking, headband-wearing, ball-whacking, thigh-slapping, coach-calling, no-prisoners-taking tennis lionesses: 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2
“I knew going into this match that I would have to dig deep,” Maria said afterwards. “I might be down, I might be up. I learned a great deal and came out with a win.”
Did she enjoy the battle? “I loved it,” she said, almost interrupting the reporter.
Azarenka did not take much pleasure in the fight: “It’s tough to enjoy when you’re not playing well.”
The crowd certainly enjoyed watching these two heavy-hitters trade body blows. The women are now tied 1-1 in their head-to-head. Could this be the next great rivalry in tennis?
And in the too good not to post, but apropos of nothing department, Maria had some funny stuff to say about babies in her presser.
A baby started crying at a crucial point in the first set, and it took a good 30 seconds for Mom to commence the parental walk-of-shame out of the stadium. When asked if she heard the baby, Maria said: “Did I hear the baby?” (pause) “My grandmother in Russia heard the baby.” And then randomly said: “It’s like a baby boom in Manhattan Beach (where Maria lives). . . I hope it’s not contagious.“
Maria “not Kim Clijsters” Sharapova plays Alona Bondarenko in the next round.
