ESPN’s annual award show, the ESPYS, was held yesterday evening at the Nokia Theater in Downtown L.A. The Williams sisters were there to represent tennis and work the red carpet. Success on both counts, I say!
Bethanie Mattek-Sands was also there, representing for us mere mortals. Thanks, Bethanie!
Serena won the award for “Best Female Tennis Player”, beating out Dinara Safina (ouch!) and Svetlana Kuznetsova (who should have been there, cracking up Kobe Bryant with her Kid Cudi impressions or whatever). Serena was nominated for “Best Female Athlete” but lost to Nastia Liukin (the only Russian-American who can beat her on a big stage?) Dinara Safina lost to golfer Lorena Ochoa in the “Best Female International Athlete” category.
Roger Federer won the award for “Best Male Tennis Player” (sorry, Rafa!) Last year’s Wimbledon Final lost to last year’s Super Bowl in the “Best Game” category (shocking!) And Nadal lost to Usain Bolt in “Best Male International Athlete” (which sounds cheesy, anyway.)
Venus and Serena also presented the “Arthur Ashe Courage Award” to Nelson Mandela, which was accepted by his daughter and grandson.
Fake Twitters were the running gag of the evening. Here’s Samuel L. Jackson checking in on Serena:
Venus Twittered for real: “Espys was fun! The only fun award show!”
The ESPYS will be broadcast on ESPN on Sunday, July 19 at 9pm ET.
Here are some more photos from the evening. I found a couple tennis player decoys – who do you think they look like?
