Maria Sharapova returned to professional singles competition for the first time in nine months today at the Warsaw Open, beating Tathiana Garbin in a hard fought three sets: 6-1, 6-7(6), 6-3. Here are some highlights and interview from the WTA.

It’s great to see Miss Shriek-apova back! And according to tennisreporters.net, the shoulder is holding up (so far). Here’s Maria: The shoulder did not bother me at all during the game. Right now it is numb, I have ice on it.”

I wonder if her vocal chords will need a breaking in period along with her shoulder? Lots of “throat coat” tea may be required!

Here are some photos of Maria in action (click to enlarge.) I know we’ve all missed seeing that “I’ll cut a bitch” face on court.

It’s not impossible that Maria will make it into the weekend, now that the top two seeds, Caroline Wozniacki and Agnieszka Radwanska, have both withdrawn from the tournament with injury (in Radwanska’s case, there are also rumors that her dad was unhappy with the appearance fee.) Zheng Jie is the highest remaining seed. Maria will face a lucky loser in her next round.
