Roger Federer had this to say about his impending fatherhood after his straight set victory over Marc Giquel yesterday in Indian Wells:
“I think in a way I always had the dream that once I became No. 1 in the world if I have a child I hope I have it early enough so he can see me playing. So this is very exciting.”
I know Federer-phobes will roll their eyes at this quote, but I think it’s pretty cute. Of course Roger’s baby is going to be a big-time Federer fan! But I’m wondering – did Roger forget that he isn’t No. 1 anymore, or is he implying that he plans to get his ranking back sometime soon? If it’s the latter, he’ll be a busy man over the next few months, what with accompanying his “wife-girlfriend” (his term) to ultrasound sessions while figuring out a way to beat Rafael Nadal on three surfaces. But Roger is nothing if not self-assured!
Here’s more baby-talk from Federer’s post match presser:
“I think it’s not going to really disturb my mind-set on tennis a whole lot. I’ve always made sure that my schedule is (arranged with time to) get away from tennis a little bit and then come back when I’m ready to play again. . .If it does something to me, I think it’s going to motivate me to play for a long time.”
Federer remains coy on the baby’s due date:
“And yeah, the baby is due in summer. Summer is a big word, yeah. I’m not going to say any more.”
I’m still betting on a grass court delivery for Baby Mirger!
