“I always believe I’m the best, whether I’m No. 1 or whether I’m a hundred.”
So said Serena Williams after claiming her 10th Major title last night in the Australian Open final. She dominated rising star Dinara Safina, 6-0, 6-3, winning the championship for the fourth time and regaining the No. 1 ranking. The last time she took the trophy Down Under was in 2007, when she was ranked 81 in the world and thrashed the No. 1 seed, Maria Sharapova, allowing her the same number of games she gave Safina. (The score was 6-1, 6-2)
Serena’s self-confidence is more than self-belief (or arrogance, as the haters would say) – it’s the God’s honest truth. And it’s a relief to have the best player in the women’s game officially at the top.
The rest of the WTA tour better step it up. Besides Venus, can anyone be the Rafa to Serena’s Roger?
