Oh my goodness, what is it about the Australian Open? Fernando Verdasco? Really?
Before you get mad at me, I KNOW that Fernando is a good player. I’ve watched him live a number of times, and I know he has a huge game and a big heart to go along with it. Guru Gil Reyes and super-coach Darren Cahill have obviously done wonders. But Fernando Verdasco is just not supposed to outlast Andy Murray in five sets. He’s supposed to fold miserably after riding a two set hot streak, succumb to the pressure, spray forehands and consider taking that day job as a telenovela star. He’s NOT supposed to beat the tournament favorite with his steely resolve and 140 mph serves.
Is he really the surprise we are waiting for?
On the other hand, I’m eating humble pie after jumping on the Murray band wagon. How humiliating! To go out to FERNANDO VERDASCO of all people! And I hated his post match “there’s more to life than tennis” attitude in the press conference. No, Andy, there isn’t. Even I know that.
So what are you thinking, y’all? Besides the obvious (Rafa wins the whole thing), how do you think this is going to shake out?
