So I had picked Ernests Gulbis as my surprise finalist of the Australian Open. I thought he’d built up enough mojo and momentum to pull off the Tsonga/Gonzalez/Baghdatis role to make it to the title match next Sunday. Of course, my prediction’s gone to sh*t now that the curly haired Latvian’s lost to Igor Andreev, who I really hope doesn’t take on the surprise-finalist mantle (I’m not a fan of the babushka ‘do rag.)
I’ve decided to add Mario Ancic to my surprise finalist list. The guy broke Ivo Karlovic 5 times in his last match, which has to do something for a player’s confidence. Plus, he’s a good replacement for the boyish cutie-pie Gulibs.
But here’s the thing about the surprise finalists – they usually are pretty surprising! Which means that Andreev is probably a good bet.
