GOTOTENNIS - Tennis blog. Tennis news. Tennis gossip.

tennis ROGER FEDERERS SUNDANCE DEBUTI was finally able to take a break from work and actually watch a movie at the Sundance Film Festival. And imagine my joy when the film happened to feature tennis and Roger Federer!

Today I saw September Issue, R.J. Cutler’s documentary on Anna Wintour and Vogue Magazine. It was shot in 2007, and features a few great tennis moments.

The best one was when the crew followed Andre Leon Talley to his tennis lesson (see above). The fashion guru says he took up the sport at Wintour’s urging – she was worried for his health – but I think it was because of the accessories. So now he hits the court in full fashion world regalia – Louis Vuitton tennis racquet cover and traveling case, diamond encrusted “tennis bracelet” watch, and of course, an LV logoed towel draped artfully around his shoulders at all times. He claims to have been playing for a few years, but from the looks of it he could have started yesterday.

Roger’s moment comes while Anna and photographer Mario Testino are meeting in London to discuss an upcoming fashion shoot. She asks, “Did you see Roger play?” and he says “No, but I heard he won.” I may have been the only one in the audience to catch that reference.

And tennis comes up in the very final moments of the film, when the filmmakers conduct an “In the Actor’s Studio” style interview:

What’s your greatest strength?

“My decisciveness”

Your greatest weakness?
“My children.”

The gift that you want the most?
“A better backhand.”

So even if you’re not a Fedophile or a fashionista, you probably have more than you thought in common with Anna Wintour.

(I’m leaving Utah tomorrow and looking forward to watching the Australian Open! If it’s half as great as last year’s tournament, we’re in for a treat! Go Roger!)
