The Australian Open draw doesn’t come out until next Friday, so why not indulge in some fantasy finals predictions? We can worry later about who’s playing Karlovic in the third round.
Here goes nothing:
Men’s final: Andy Murray vs. Ernests Gulbis
This would be a thrilling clash of on-the-cusp superstar versus baby-faced supertalent (a la last year’s Djokovic vs. Tsonga barn burner.) Even Jo-Wilfried likes Gulbis’s chances. Here’s what he had to say about Ernests’s win over Novak in Brisbane this week (where Tsonga’s seeded #2):
“For me it wasn’t really a surprise (that Djokovic lost). Gulbis is the man who is going to be a surprise this year. Every match he is playing better and better.”
Despite the Gulbis hype (and those pesky World Nos. 1 and 2), there’s no doubt that it’s Murray’s Moment right now. The Scot will nab his maiden major Down Under no matter who he faces on the other side of the net.
Women’s final: Serena Williams vs. Jelena Jankovic
Rematch! Who doesn’t want a replay of last summer’s highly entertaining U.S. Open final? It’s the perfect chance for the saucy Serb to show off her Pat Etcheberry-primed physique and the confidence of being the tour’s official top gun. I’m going out on a limb and picking Jelena as this year’s AO Champ – that trophy’s getting smeared with glitter lip gloss, for sure!
Come on, do tell! Who’s in your finals fantasy?
