Even though these two talented players are lumped together in the ever-expanding “young guns” category, there isn’t anything too similar about their tennis. Tsonga is the flashy big man with a humongous game and a touch of French flair at the net, while del Potro is more of a gangly giant with a grinding mentality and a punchy baseline game.
They are evenly matched, if today’s double tiebreaker scoreline means anything. But can both of them really continue to capitalize on their talents? And maybe more important, can either of them stay injury free for long enough to actually piece together a lasting career? JMdP retires from matches more than anyone on the ATP tour and Jo-Dub missed this year’s Roland Garros and Wimbledon championships to recover from knee surgery.
Bottom line – will either of them ever win a Major? And gosh darn it, who do you just like better as a player?
Tsonga’s my pick on both counts. I think his firestarter style will get him to the finish line of a Slam at least once in his career (I’m picking next year’s US Open). And it’s a heckuva lot of fun to watch a great looking guy rush the net and hit leaping overheads before bellowing ALLEZ!!!
I’m not going to disparage Juan Martin, though – he’s a smart, steady player. But I’ll let one of you tell me why he’s the next coming.
