What’s going on here? What happened to all the male players? Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to watch the ladies of the WTA, but you have to wonder what the lawyers and Hermes-tie-wearing ATP executives are up to when the guys disappear from the television screens, even when tournaments like Shanghai (last week) and Tokyo (this week) feature both men and women players. What’s the point of joint tournaments, if only one of the tours is featured? And what’s the point of Tennis Channel again? It can’t be “No Strings: Max Mirnyi.” Sigh. . .
It may not be the official off-season, but something sure smells “off” to me!
Serena was stinking it up at the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart yesterday, losing in three sets to Na Li even after taking the first set 6-0. The American also lost her No. 1 ranking, handing it over to Jelena Jankovic, who once again “wins” it by default.
But before I get too grouchy, I must remind myself that Venus is still alive in Stuttgart, as are Safina, Dementieva and Zvonareva (holy, Olympic medals, Batman!) So we could still have some great tennis in store this weekend. At this point, I’ll take anything.
