I confess, I’m guilty of forgetting about Fed Cup. Or at least not caring enough to remember. This is shameful behavior from a tennis blogger and I won’t even try to offer a good excuse. I just like Davis Cup better – maybe it’s because there’s more potential for macho posturing a la Hewitt vs. Argentina. Or because I like cute guys in matching warm ups. Like I said, I don’t have a good excuse!
All this is a way of offering a belated congratulations to the Russian Fed Cup team, who has now won its fourth title in five years. It’s worth noting that Russia swept Spain without the help of 2 of its three Beijing Olympic medalists – Svetlana Kuznetsova and bronze medalist Vera Zvonareva led the team while Safina and Dementieva relaxed after their impressive U.S. Open efforts.
Perhaps the resurgent Williams sisters, a strong French team of Cornet, Mauresmo and doubles diva Nathalie Dechy, and No.1 ranked Serbs Ivanovic and Jankovic will all compete next time around and give the Russia team a run for its money. And I’ll remember to watch.
Tennis Channel is replaying the Fed Cup final through Thursday this week, if you want to catch up on the action. Or visit the Fed Cup website, which I wish wasn’t pink.
