The highlight of our trip to the U.S. Open this year was watching the final sets of Nadal vs. Querrey. It was impossible not to get swept up in the crowd’s energy and the drama of the moment. It was a great match for U.S. tennis and for Rafa fans, who witnessed their man pulling out a win despite poor play against a good opponent.
After the match, the unassuming Sam wandered over to the food court, got a kiss from someone who looked like his grandmother, and then sat around enjoying the “I took a set off Rafa” glow. It’s pretty amazing that he felt comfortable chilling in public after 18,000 people were cheering him on inside Arthur Ashe (okay, maybe 2,000 of those people were pro-Rafa.)
Sam, if you keep playing like you did on Monday, you won’t be so under-the-radar anymore!
Now I’m back in L.A. and far away from the Open. I’m glad I was in the air during Federer’s five-setter against Andreev yesterday, or I probably would’ve had a heart attack. Fed fans, what did you think?
