Sorry the quality isn’t top notch, but the video does show some of the highlights of what turned out to be a fantastic first round match in New York today against Rafa Nadal and tough qualifier Bjorn Phau. In case you didn’t see it (I caught the first set, which was fantastic), Rafa won in three tight sets 7-6 (4), 6-3, 7-6 (4). A good first round scrapper, but Rafa needed to take a medical time out for a gnarly blister and had this to say afterward (from tennis.com):
“I didn’t play with normal intensity,” Nadal said. “Probably I’m a little bit tired.”
Asked whether he was more worn down mentally, physically or emotionally from Beijing, he said: “I think it is a little bit of everything.”
So I’m wondering, is this Rome-weary or Olympics-weary? Rafa complained of being tired while playing in both of these events, but had varying results: losing to Juan Carlos Ferrero early in one and taking the gold medal in the other.
