A couple news items today more than hint that Pat McEnroe is coaching Andy Roddick at the U.S. Open.
According to John Wertheim’s Mailbag: “(Andy Roddick) will also be receiving ‘special assistance’ from Pat McEnroe at the U.S. Open.”
And tennis-x reports from the National Tennis Center’s practice courts that “While Nadal and Federer are with their entourages, Roddick seems to be without ever-present brother/coach John Roddick.”
The partnership makes sense – P-Mac has coached Andy to success before in Davis Cup, and will be doing so again in semi-final action against Spain next month in Madrid (although any success against Rafa on clay is more unlikely than a second U.S. Open victory for the American.)
I’d say that if Andy’s healthy, he’s given himself the best possible chance to do well in NYC.
