Roger’s loss to Karlovic today at the Cincy Masters has magically transformed Fedophiles everywhere into rabid Novak Djokovic fans, at least through this week’s semifinals, where the Serb is slotted to meet Nadal. It’s no secret that Rafa will win the No. 1 ranking this week if he wins the Cincy final.
It’s a troubling state of affairs for Fed fans, but honestly, no big surprise. Roger’s commented a few times this week about his single minded pursuit of Olympic gold, and how his focus for this week was on practicing and being in good shape for Beijing. He did mention yesterday that he hoped to win “a couple of matches” in Cincy (click here for the interview), and it’s worrying, to say the least, that he couldn’t make good on that modest goal.
Let’s hope Roger knows what he’s doing. Perhaps Roger just can’t wait to start practicing at the Beijing Olympic Green Tennis Courts or has an irresistible craving for the city’s famous roast duck? There’s no doubt that carrying the flag for Switzerland in the Opening Ceremonies will cheer him up a little and motivate him to win. (Rafa won’t be sharing his spotlight there – David Cal Figueroa, a Spanish kayaker, will be Spain’s flag bearer.) And hey, don’t underdogs have a history of winning Gold in Olympic tennis?
I think I’ll cope by making a date for sangria and tapas this Sunday. It will feel much better to celebrate Rafa’s amazing season rather than dread the inevitable. (And I have no idea where to go for Serbian food!)
