Oh my goodness, the first matches on Centre Court and Court 1 today were fabulous and dramatic enough to be semi finals, not second rounds!
Djokovic vs. Safin
This was almost a beat down! We all knew that Safin wasted Nole three years ago at the Aussie, but did any of us really think he’d score a repeat? I was calling this match “tricky,” at worst, for the Serb. Safin was the magician out there.
My husband observed the main difference between the two players before the end of the first game: “Marat just emasculates Novak.” This match didn’t even make it to dick measuring contest status – Nole looked deflated from the first moment he walked on the court! (What would Mats Wilander say?) Safin recognized the pressure that Djokovic was feeling, admitting that he was in the easier position of having no one expecting anything of him. “He’s the one who has to win matches,” Marat said post match, “For me, nobody expects anything.” Click here for more from the studly Russian.
Novak gave a classy post-match presser, with nary a tear in his pretty eyes. He did concede being mentally tired, but gave all due credit to the Russian. Click here for more from the Djoker.
I don’t really care about how this shakes down on the Federer v. Djokovic front – I’m just thrilled to have at least one more match of yummy Marat in my future!
Dechy vs. Ivanovic
What a wonderful match! There was loads of net play, two match points saved by the World No. 1, and a 10-8 third set! I hope the final will be half as exciting. I got tears in my eyes at the end, when Dechy was huddled in misery under her towel and the classy British fans coaxed her out with a standing ovation. I like the Frenchwoman, having watched her play mixed with her male-counterpart, Fabrice Santoro, live at the U.S. Open a few years ago. She’s classy, smart and lovely (and Ana ain’t shabby either!)
I’m not sure what this match says about Ana’s game right now. But a good, tough win against a talented opponent can’t hurt her in terms of experience and confidence. Click here for Ana’s take.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Can someone tell me why ESPN would rather show Sue Mott and Bud Collins talking crap about out of shape British female players instead of Roger Federer on Centre Court. The commentators are delusional, thinking they are more interesting than the tennis. Glad to see Roger crusied through Soderling in straights!
What are these wildly entertaining commentators going to blab on and on about now that Djokovic can’t beat Federer in the semis? I guess they’ll continue to harp on Fed’s French Open loss. That and Anna Wintour’s appearance in Rog’s box. Sigh and yuck.
Wow! Bolelli beat Gonzo? Roger’s catching all kinds of breaks today.
Nice to see Baghdatis, Hewitt, Wawrinka and F-Lo all made it through.
The Canadian hope, Frank Dancevic went down the American Bobby Reynolds.
Juan Carlos Fererro added another retirement to the men’s draw today.
The top Russian women did well today, with Sveta, Anna and Elena all winning.
My dark horse, Sam Stosur went out to Nicole Vaidisova. Too bad to lose to such an off-form opponent.
Amelie Maursemo is through to the third round! Hurray!!!
Nice to see odd-ball Bethanie Mattek continue her good play, beating Vera Dushevina.
