Weird day today, wasn’t it? Blake, Mauresmo and Nalbandian all lost matches they should have won, Roger gave up the first set against Montanes and then went into steamroller mode, and I enjoyed watching Bethanie Mattek play.
I was really sad to see Amelie lose to a qualifier in straight sets. Now that Justine is gone, she’s one of the only smooth, silky players out there. She also seems to be intelligent and nice, for what it’s worth. Perhaps she’s too smart for her own good, finding other things to occupy her mind now that she’s won two major tournaments? Here’s hoping she’ll find her game before Wimbledon, we need some more variety on the women’s side.
It was also sad to learn that soon-to-retire Fabrice “the magician” Santoro only got one game off Ferrer today.
It wasn’t all bad news for the French today – one of their countrymen scored the biggest upset so far. No. 6 seed/badass David Nalbandian was up two sets to none before the 145-ranked frenchman Jeremy Chardy came back to win it in five. The barrel chested David blamed the inexplicable loss on an abdominal injury – perhaps it was a case of one too many croissants. Seriously, even with the gut, why hasn’t this guy won a major yet?
If Jose Higueras’s success with the resurgent Robby Ginepri are any sign, Roger’s made a smart hiring decision. (But what’s up with the slumping Shahar Peer, another Jose client, who went down in the first round to Sam Stoser?)
Dueling coverage: I’m not complaining, but the Tennis Channel/ESPN coverage is a bit discombobulating. If only we could combine the production quality of ESPN with ace TC commentators John McEnroe and Martina Navritilova. Darren Cahill, Pam Shriver and Mary Joe can stay on, too.
As much as I enjoy chair ump Kader Nouni’s groovy look, I thought it was strange that he argued with Maria when she asked to stop playing because of darkness. It was 9:45 for goodness sakes!
The women’s draw is just so fluid right now. I feel like anyone could take it at this point – Serena, Venus, Jelena, Maria, Svetlana, Dinara, Ana or even Vera. It’s a total toss up. I think we need a poll to figure this out.
Chris Fowler should not be allowed to talk to Roger. Ever.
