Did anyone else catch the Canas-Gonzales match? I almost passed on it, thinking, “I’ve watched way too much tennis already.” Boy, am I glad I gave into temptation – the first set alone was brilliant!
First off, I love Gonzo and dislike Canas (it’s the drug suspension, not the two wins over Fed), and it’s always fun to cheer and yell at the television on Sunday night. Even better, the two have perfectly contrasting playing styles – Gonzo’s go-for-broke offense and improbable shot-making seem even more outrageous when matched up against Canas’s souped up grinding and tough-as-nails mentality. A sample point might include two bionic inside-out forehands – both bunted back by Canas – followed by a screamer down the line, a defensive two-fisted backhand, a scampering cross court get by Gonzo, Canas’s canny down-the-the line response, a volley, a lucky stab and an overhead smash or two to finish.
Or how about in the third game of the second set, when Gonzo earned a break point with a between-the- legs-passing-shot-winner???!!!! Even that didn’t faze Canas, who ended up holding his serve. This game was representative of the entire match: Gonzo was fantastic but Canas won, anyway.
Final thought: as working with Fernando grows increasingly stressful, could Larry Stefanki be considering a getaway to Club Fed?
