Santoro v. Rog: Pretty darn entertaining for a 6-1 6-2 6-0 scoreline. Roger was in full flight today, doing that Matrix morphing thing he does when he’s in the groove. It was fun because as Justin Gimbelstob pointed out, Roger actually enjoys playing someone with a crafty game like Santoro’s. It also called to mind Roger’s oft-repeated statement that he used to try to beat opponents at their own games. Old habits die hard, and Rog had plenty of “cute” moments today – just in case anyone thought Santoro might have more flair than he. What fun! I hope both players stay on tour for at least another decade.
Maria v. Lindsay: It wasn’t competitive, but it was impressive. Maria was beaming out those same tigress-vibes that Serena was working yesterday. I’m thinking that maybe, just maybe, Shrieky could beat her arch nemesis this time around. Could you imagine how great a competitive match between these two Amazon’s would be? Is it possible that Maria, in her own way, could be the comeback story of the year? (Side note – what was up with Yuri’s Special Ops look?)
Lindsay disappointed me. I KNOW she had a kid 7 months ago blah, blah, blah, and I’m THRILLED she’s back (and proving to herself how much she loves the game), but the woman can’t move her feet. I was shocked at how many times she’d let a ball go by without even taking a wing and a prayer swipe at the thing. Old man Santoro was racing from sideline to sideline bunting back Roger’s forehands and Lindsay can’t even pretend to reach for a ball? She made Maria look like Gael Monfils out there. But hey, I’m being too hard on her – at the very least this loss will inspire her to keep getting better. Lindsay, you already got a Chance In Hell at Wimbledon.
The Williams sisters vs. Aussie partners Monique Adamczak and Christina Wheeler. Wow, now this was made-for-t.v. doubles. Who knew Venus could lay down the law like that? I loved the shot of the sisters arguing with the clueless chair during a change over (the chair had admitted to seeing their opponent’s serve out but did not overrule.)
“This conversation is over NOW,” said Serena, attempting to dam-up her sister’s tirade.
“Right is right and wrong is wrong” Venus said, ignoring her younger sister. “And I’m NO fool!”
They then got up from their chairs and proceeded to take their anger out on the innocent girls across the net – pummeling them with volleys and smashes (and deafening them with primal screams.) Their opponents held their own, and the crowd was treated to some entertaining points. In the end, the Williams were victorious and had class enough to shake the umpire’s hand.
I’m glad the sisters won this match for many reasons, the primary one being that it means we’ll see more doubles coverage!
I watched the Tennis Channel for the first time during this tournament. Bill Macatee is a much better version of Chris Fowler and Martina Navratilova is one of the best technical commentators ever. Loved her bit on grip size today. She’s also really honest, calling Roger a “smart-ass-uh-alec” when he deserved it. The volume level of the TC commentary is at a nice low level – although if the match is on the ho-hum side you could start dozing off.
Nadal, Djokovic and Roger have all had some really dominant score lines early on. The juices are flowing! Yowza!
Nalbandian must be one of the meanest looking tennis players in history with the thick body, the deep set eyes, the curling lips, and that stringy hair dripping with sweat. He wins my “don’t want to meet in a dark alley” award.
I’ve sworn off Safin long ago, but I’m really looking forward to the Safin/Baghdatis match. Both are flashy, unpredictable and crazy on court. And cute, too!
Speaking of – why did Adidas design only one men’s tennis shirt this season? Hyung-Taik Lee, Robin Haase, Marat Safin, Novak Djokovic, Marcos Baghdatis – the list must go on. Sam Querry was looking unique in his boring all-white with stripes on the sleeves.
Final thought – Chris Fowler is such an ass. Did anyone else catch him telling Sam Querry he has a 14% chance to beat Djokovic in the third round? Will someone lock his hotel room door from the outside, please?
