They did it! The fact that it was practically a foregone conclusion does not make it any less of an achievement. Thank God they didn’t get stuck in that awful Moscow stadium slogging around on cracking red clay. Yuck. And wasn’t it nice to see the nervy James Blake holding his ground and going beyond what the critics expected of him? He even defied Tarpischev, the Russian’s crafty coach, who seemed to have built his entire strategy on the assumption that Blake would lose to Youzhny. Ha HA! Don’t estimate the power of PMac, Shamil!!!
One question: will this win boost Blake’s ’08 game more than Roddick’s? While Andy will undoubtedly take this victory as one of the most important and well-earned of his career, I think Blake’s mental breakthrough (along with that 5-setter he won over Santoro at the last U.S. Open) might get him to the semis of the Australian next month. (Can the Aussie Open really be starting on January 14?)
All the usual sites have covered the D.C. final much more insightfully than I ever could – check out this piece from a local paper. The writer’s breakdown of the Bryan bros’ chest bump is hilarious! And get a load of Bud Collins’s customized iBook. Spectacular!
