Frank Dancevic, boy, did I have his number! When I called him out as “one to watch” after his great match against Gonzo at Indian Wells, even I suspected some jingoism on my part, given that I am an undocumented Canadian citizen. So much so that I restrained myself from preening when he made it to the finals of Indy a couple of weeks ago, after a solid victory over Andy Roddick. But now my boy has made it to the quarters of a MASTERS SERIES event, taking a set off Rafa, to boot. Although I realize that this is a very un-Canadian type of thing to do, I will now TOOT away as I share my comments from this past March:
Go, Canada! My own “player to watch” pick for the season is Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Canada. He took Gonzo to three sets in one of the best matches I saw over the weekend. My quads burnt from watching how LOW Dancevic got for his one-handed backhands. Like many who possess a pretty one-hander, he also had great variety. He could chip, charge, slice – all that good stuff. I think he’ll makes a statement on tour this year – and not just because his game is fun to watch.
I have now spotted two up-and-comers before the commentators did – Jelena Jankovic and Frank Dancevic. And no, my ancestors do not hail from the former Yugoslavia.
